The Assagay Private Guest Lodge is located in the Madwala Conservation Area in the Mhlatuzuna Valley in Assagay area, 0.5 km to the North of the National road and 30 km from Durban's splendid coast line, 15km from Shongweni Nature Reserve. It lies at an altitude of between 615m to 675m situated on the edge of the Kook-Hillcrest Plateau. Located within the headwaters of the Mhlatuzana River catchments which drains eastwards into the bay of Natal. The Kloof-Hillcrest Plateau is bounded by the Kloof escarpment, which forms the edge of the Pinetown basin to the east, by the fault-line escarpment which descends into the valley of A thousand Hills to the North, and by Key Ridge to the West. The Plateau edge is dissected by numerous steams which have formed steep sided valleys, with gorges and cliffs in places. The Assagai Private Guest Lodge is located in such a valley, most on the South facing slopes, with an easterly and westerly outlook along the course of the valley. The climate is sub tropical with a wet summer season. The mean daily temperature in the hottest month of February is 20.9oC and for the coldest month of July it is 14.3oC. Fauna. The site provides a variety of habitats ranging from wetland, through to grassland and thicket. The wetland support aquatic, amphibious and flying species ranging from invertebrates to fish, a variety of reed and tree frogs and larger amphibians, to birds, and mammals. The grasslands are inhabited by reed buck, blue duiker, gray duiker, bush pig, bush buck, spotted genet, clawless otto, various mongoose as well as smaller animals. The thicket provides niches for various forest species, particularly birds which are readily audible on the site, elusive and rarer mammals, as well as the commoner rock dassie. Types of bird life include: Hadeda, Red throated Wryneck, Blackheaded Oriole, Black-eyed Blubul, Cape White-eyed, Cape Canary, Yellow Eyed Canary, Grass bird, Weaver, Le Valliant Cisicola, Bluebilled FireFinch, Steepe Buzzard, Yellowbilled Kite, Lesserstripped Swallow, Black Saw-wing Swallow, Didric Cuckoo, Burchell's Coucial, Cape Robin, Kurrichane Thrush, Redeyed Dove, Dusky Fly Catcher, Paradise Flycatcher, Black Sun Bird, Whitebellied Sunbird, Forktailed Drongo, and Wood Owl
